We’ve all heard of the romantic restaurant proposal, and the beach at sunset proposal. There’s nothing wrong with proposing to your partner using a traditional approach – in fact for some people, this may be the perfect choice for their partner. It’s easy to find information on the tried and true methods of proposing, but for progressive, non-traditional couples, this approach may not be fitting.

For the non-traditionalists who are looking for a new and exciting way to propose – look no further. Here are 3 proposal trends you haven’t heard about!

Instagram Proposal

Perfect for photographers and artistic types, an Instagram proposal may be one of the newest, trendiest, and most creative ways to propose.

Here’s one way to pull it off:

  • Create a brand new Instagram account
  • Name the account something special (use a nickname, an inside joke, or just your and your partner’s names)
  • Upload photos from the beginning of your relationship first, and work your way forward in time, adding photos of important events
  • Caption each photo and add appropriate hashtags
  • End your photo montage with a photo or video of you proposing
  • Present the account to your partner in person when they least expect it – and have the ring ready!

Community Garden Proposal

A new trend is to use a community garden to plant a variety of blooms for your partner.  Once the plants have matured, place stakes in the ground with the names of the flowers (and what each flower means). Lead your partner through the garden, picking a single bloom from each plant, and hand it to your partner, telling them how each of the flowers represents how you feel about them. Once you’ve gone through all of the plants, its time to pop the question!

Things to Remember:

  • It takes time to create a garden – this is something that will require months of careful preparation, so be sure you have the time to tend to the plants
  • Be careful that you choose plants that will bloom at the same time – and that the time corresponds with when you want to propose
  • The garden can be kept even after the proposal as a special spot for you and your partner – just be sure to keep up with weeding, and watering!

Charity Work Proposal

Some couples like to give back and regularly perform work for charity. One of the coolest new trends is to plan a proposal with help from the members of your partner’s favorite charity.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Ensure that the date and time of the proposal doesn’t interrupt the charity work being performed – consider proposing after an event has taken place
  • Work with the leaders of the charity and make sure that they are on board with your proposal plan
  • Coordinating with a group of people to pull off a proposal can be difficult – consider hiring a professional proposal planning service such as The Heart Bandits to make it happen!
