Short answer: No!
No matter the circumstances, proposing over social media is never the right way to pop the question. It lacks just about every criteria for a good marriage proposal idea — it’s not intimate, personal, or romantic.
You should do anything you can to make sure that you are able to propose to your girlfriend in person. Even if your relationship is long distance, choose a time when you are visiting each other to have that special moment. Technology has come a long way in how we are able to communicate virtually, but there is still nothing like holding her hands and looking directly into her eyes when you ask for her hand in marriage. And you can’t present the ring through a computer!
When you plan out your proposal, you should try to come up with an idea that is unique to your relationship and symbolic of your love for one another. While proposing over social media may seem creative, it is actually too common and has become a cheesy cliche.
Your proposal should be a fairly intimate affair. Even if you do it in a public setting, it is still all about the two of you having this special moment together. Proposing over social media crowds all three thousand of your closest friends into your proposal. Have an intimate moment with your girlfriend, and then you can broadcast your engagement to the world and let them celebrate with you!
Even if circumstances mean that you can’t propose in person, don’t resort to social media. If you aren’t able to be together for the moment, find other ways to make it intimate and personal. A romantic skype date accompanied by the delivery of a lavish bouquet of her favorite flowers will work just fine.
