Despina Amerikanos wanted to make her proposal more than a simple expression of feelings, but also a declaration that marriage matters. She took months to craft the perfect proposal, booking a helicopter and enlisting her parents as allies in keeping her plans a secret. Not surprisingly, her now-fiancée, Caitlin Cashion, said yes – even though Ms. Amerikanos was so nervous when presenting the engagement ring that she snapped the hinge on the box!
The now-engaged Australian couple will be traveling to New Zealand to tie the knot, and will be holding a civil ceremony at home in Tasmania, one of five Australian states to recognize civil unions. “When I look at getting married, I wish I didn’t have to explain it’s a gay wedding, I’m marrying my best friend,” Ms. Amerikanos said.

An Amazing Propsal – With Lady Gaga’s Help!
Imagine a star-studded gay marriage proposal, and you’ve got a recipe for fairytale romance dreams come true. Lady Gaga invited her friend Jay, whom she describes as “family and an incredible man and incredible friend” onstage during a show at the Manchester Arena. His boyfriend, Shaun, was also invited up. In a video a fan posted on YouTube, Gaga moves over, handing the spotlight to Jay, who gets down on one knee and surprises Shaun with a proposal.

Of course, Shaun answers with a “Yes!” after which Gaga serenades the couple with a fantastic rendition of her hit song, Born This Way. She ended the proposal by telling Jay and Shaun, “I wish you a beautiful, long, and happy life.”
In a comment posted on YouTube, Jay says: “That was me, down on one knee there! It was just amazing. So surreal I couldn’t even describe how it felt. The crowd just fuzzed into the background I forgot where I was. I couldn’t be any more grateful to Gaga and her team for organising that. Best night of my life.
