What do you do if you’re a lady in love, and you’re both ready to take the next step- but he still hasn’t gotten around to proposing? There’s nothing stopping you from proposing to him, and in fact a rising number of women have chosen to propose to their boyfriends instead of waiting for the men to take the initiative. Since this is a relatively new phenomenon, it should be approached carefully; here are a few tips to make sure that your proposal goes as wonderfully as you hope.
Ready?
Before you leap into a proposal, stop and consider whether or not he’s ready for it; although you may feel that it’s time, he may need a little more time to make up his mind. If he’s definitely ready for marriage, then go for it!
Tradition Matters
One thing to think about before you go out and buy the ring: is he a traditional man, who might be upset that he wasn’t the one proposing? If he’s a flexible and free-thinking fellow, then he’ll probably be fine with your unorthodox approach to engagement. If he’s more old-fashioned, however, it may be better to let him take charge.
Rejection
Every man must go into a proposal ready for rejection, for any reason. You, too, must be prepared for him to say ‘no’, or even ‘not yet.’ Acknowledge, too, that he may say no simply because he wants to be the one to ask, in the end.
Keep Quiet!
If you do propose, and receive an enthusiastic yes, wait a little before you start trumpeting the news. He may need some time to really get used to being engaged, and since you planned the proposal, he may want to take charge of spreading the news. Sit back and let him tell the world.
