A wedding proposal is something that most people never forget, whether they are doing the asking, or the answering. However, there is so much that can get lost in the rush of joy and excitement, that some of the finer details can slip by the wayside. Here are five things to think about for your proposal:

DON’T FORGET THE PHOTOGRAPHER!

So many people end up with no photographs of one of the most romantic moments of their lives. They end up remembering it by the ring, and of course the spouse, which are lovely things to have. However, a little planning, whether by planting a talented friend with a camera, or hiring a professional, can yield precious photographs down the road.

TO KNEEL OR NOT TO KNEEL?

Getting down on one knee is a symbol of honor, loyalty, and surrender. It has historically been done as a sign of respect in religious ceremony, loyalty to royalty, or even surrender in war. Kneeling before the person you love can signify to them how precious they are to you, and how much you respect and love them. There may be some circumstances when it’s not appropriate, but if it’s possible, give yourself to your beloved on your knees.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

In some families, asking the family for the hand of the beloved in marriage is an honored and important tradition. In others, it is simply not done. Find out which kind of family your sweetheart belongs to, and try hard to honor the traditions of that family. You’re not just marrying a person, you’re getting her family, too. Showing that their traditions matter to you is a great first step in that relationship.

HAVE BACK UP PLANS FOR YOUR BACK UP PLANS

If you have planned an elaborate outdoor proposal, have a plan for bad weather, unexpected crowds at your venue, wild dogs stampeding through the park, or any other thing that could go wrong. Likewise, indoor proposals can be derailed by power outages, fires, floods, or a million other nightmares. Make sure that you have a few other viable options that you can shift to easily, in case of unforeseen changes of plans. That way, your sweetheart will remember the romance of your proposal, not the hail storm that gave you both bruises.

THE RING

There are so many horror stories out there about gentlemen who tried to do creative things with the ring, and ended up losing it or damaging it before they could even pop the question. Instead, of hiding it in cake, (so she swallows it), or hiding it in your sock (just no), go to www.ringstash.com and find the perfect slim box to keep the ring safe.

    Great advice, Michele!

Just wanted to add that everyone should insure their ring before proposing! Keep the ring safe (with the jeweler, in a safe deposit box, etc.) until it is covered and you’re ready to propose…just in case 🙂
