Finding the right words to propose to your partner can be stressful. Many people are afraid they will leave something out, or get tongue-tied and forget what they were planning to say. If you follow our quick and easy guide, you will be sure to say all of the most important things.
Include an Icebreaker
When you first get down on one knee, your partner is likely to be emotional. An icebreaker will undoubtedly help get your partner through the initial shock, and allow them time to tune in to the most important part – the proposal. This can be as simple as sharing a smile or saying something like, “I know you’re the one for me.” You don’t need to be funny or come up with something that doesn’t feel natural. Just a way of easing the tension, and giving you and your partner a moment before you proceed.
A Trip Down Memory Lane
Did you go on some adventure and can’t imagine not having them by your side through all of your adventures to come? Perhaps you got through a very trying time in your life, and you realized that the two of you make a really amazing team? Take a moment to walk through a few of your most important shared experiences. This sets the mood for what is to come.
Reasons Why You Want to Marry Them
Be specific. Do you love your partner’s laugh so much that just thinking about it makes your day? Is your partner the only person who has ever really understood you? Be sure to tell them the reasons why you want to marry them. Spell it out.
I Love You
These three words are integral – do not forget to tell your partner that you love them. It may be obvious to you (why else would you be proposing?) but it is nevertheless important to say. Don’t leave this out.
Will You Marry Me?
This may seem rather obvious – only it isn’t. You need to actually propose during a marriage proposal. Make your intentions clear and direct. Just getting down on one knee with a ring isn’t enough. Don’t leave any room for doubt.
If these specific words don’t sit right with you, there are many creative alternatives (just be sure to choose words that can’t be misconstrued).
A few examples:
Will you spend the rest of your life with me?
Will you be my wife/husband?
Will you be mine forever?
If you’re worried about remembering what you plan to say – write it out. Spend some time rehearsing in front of a mirror. If you practice, you’ll feel more confident, and you’ll be less likely to forget anything. If you decide memorizing isn’t for you, just speak from the heart. That will do to!
