Helen Wesson wasn’t expecting anything but a chance to see her favorite movie, True Romance, when she walked into a Birmingham theater with her boyfriend, Dean Harris. Dean had seen a poster for the film, and Helen jumped at the chance to go see the Tarantino Classic. The theater was strangely empty, however, and before True Romance, they played an odd 1920’s-esque silent film- starring Dean Harris.

The film ended with Dean on the screen holding a sign reading “I have a question!” and Dean in the audience on one knee. The movie was an instant hit, and Helen joyfully agreed to marry him.

This is a beautiful story, and an excellent proposal for several reasons.

The silent film itself is an original idea, which was part of the fun and surprise of the evening. It’s obvious that the whole plan was based on a true inspiration, not on an old standby or a popular idea. The originality is a big part of its charm.

Dean did a wonderful job on the film, which was clever and creative, and entertaining to watch. He paid careful attention to the film’s details, but didn’t go overboard or overreach his capabilities. It ended up being a delightful, short and poignant creation.

More importantly, he did an amazing job of tailoring this proposal to Helen’s personality and passions. She’s a movie lover, and so he arranged a film-filled evening for her- but more impressively, he was careful to select her favorite movie as the bait. The whole evening was stacked to lead her into the proposal with fun and romance, and the silent film was the cherry on top of what would have been an already wonderful night.

The takeaway here should not be that a silent film proposal is a great idea; the takeaway is that originality and personalization are vital components of a beautiful and memorable proposal, no matter what the theme. If you make sure what you do is new and surprising, and if you are careful to match your plan to your sweetheart’s personality and preferences, then your proposal is sure to be fabulous.
