A proposal should be grand, impressive, and expensive, right? The more bright lights and flashy displays, the better.  This seems to have been the rationale behind Kanye West’s massive proposal to Kim Kardashian. The music giant rented out AT&T Park in San Francisco, and escorted Kim onto the field, where she was greeted by a the bright lights of the Jumbotron, displaying the phrase “MARRY MEEE!!!”  So the question is, if Kanye proposed with a Jumbotro, why can’t I?  Well for starters, you aren’t Kanye West!  Next, while Kim seemed happy with the marriage proposal, that doesn’t mean it’s right for all girls.

If you ask any proposal expert, one of the first things that they will mention is that you should steer clear of proposal via the Jumbotron. Why?  The truth is that, in most circumstances, this proposal would seem to be based more on the likes and dislikes of the proposer, not the proposee. Most girls wouldn’t be interested in seeing their proposal on the scoreboard. It doesn’t have the romantic, intimate atmosphere that we usually associate with the perfect proposal.  Kanye himself admits it: “I’m arguing with the guy who put it together for me. He all, ‘It needs to be more romantic,’ I’m like, ‘It’s a baseball field. What you talking about? If I wanted it to be romantic, I would’ve went to a small restaurant or something.’”

The truth is that most girls want romance and personalization. This is a great example of a proposal that worked for an individual couple, but which shouldn’t be copied just because it made a big splash. If your girlfriend is a diehard sports fan, a stadium proposal might be one of her wildest dreams. However, it is absolutely necessary to stop and consider what your girl loves, and be careful to match her desires when planning your proposal- whether she desires a candlelit dinner or a Jumbotron and fighter jets.
