There has been a growing debate of whether or not couples should be allowed to have public wedding proposals. Some people see a proposal as a special and intimate moment that should be shared just between the person asking and the person being asked. Others see a public proposal as a romantic grand gesture, showing as many people as possible how much they love their significant other. So who is right? Should there even be room for a debate over someone’s personal choices when it comes to expressing their love for their partner? Here are a few things to consider when deciding if you would like a public marriage proposal idea or a private one:

Venue

One of the biggest factors in your proposal is your venue. Are you going to propose at a memorable place to you and your partner’s relationship or would you like to propose in an area that will surprise them with no suspicion of an upcoming proposal? If you decide on a public proposal, make sure to follow any rules or guidelines for the area regarding any decor, music or post proposal beverages. No one wants their night to end by spending a few hours in jail because you didn’t pay for a permit or brushed off the “No Alcohol” rule. Many public settings do allow public proposals as long as it doesn’t interfere with the general public but it is never a bad thing to ask in advance. If you would like a more intimate setting, consider a venue where you can rent out a private room just for two.

Time of Day

Many popular venues utilized in public proposals are overrun with visitors during certain parts of the day. If you want to propose in an area that you know will be busy during the afternoon or early evening, plan for a special proposal at night. Use earthly elements to your advantage like the early morning sunrise or the glittering night sky to add extra romantic ambiance. This will also give you the option of a public proposal with little to no public involvement.

Staying True to Your Plan

No matter how many proposals happen throughout history, no one’s vision will ever be the same as yours. You have the ability to create a unique and one-of-a-kind proposal for your partner and no one else’s opinion should sway you from your plans. There are always going to be people that don’t agree with the way you live your life, but this is a moment that you and your partner will remember for the rest of your lives. There is absolutely nothing wrong with making your proposal as simple or elaborate as you want it.

We hope that you don’t encounter anyone that has an issue with how you propose, but if you do, remember to reply with a calm and collected answer.
