In today’s world, society tells us that bigger is always better, especially when it comes to your engagement ring. Recent economic research has revealed that the bigger the diamond in the engagement ring, the more likely that the couple’s marriage will end in divorce. Researchers at Emory University studied 3,000 couples and found that the marriages in which engagement rings cost $20,000+ were 3.5 times more likely to get divorced compared to couples that spent between $500-$2,000. When it comes to making a decision about how much you want to spend on an engagement ring for your partner, it is important to keep these factors in mind in order to lower your financial stress that could lead to problems later in your marriage:

Traditional or Not?

Tradition has called for men to spend up to three month’s salary on an engagement ring but most women these days don’t want their man to spend that kind of money on a ring and would rather have them put it towards something more tangible. Talk to your partner before you purchase a ring and make your decision based on your knowledge of them.

Day to Day Wear

You might think that a big and flashy diamond looks great on your partner’s hand, but is it practical for them to wear on a day to day basis? Consider your partner’s place of work, will they be able to wear the ring at all times? Also consider their safety, you wouldn’t want them to be a victim of a robbery or mugging because of their ring.

Do Your Homework

Before purchasing a diamond of any kind, keep the 4 C’s developed by the Gemological Institute of America in mind. They are: carat, clarity, color and cut. The importance of each “C” will be up to you to decide based on your partner but they will help in finding the perfect diamond.
