A lot of people get nervous when it’s time to speak in public, whether the audience is a room full of strangers or just a small gathering of friends. The experience often conjures flashbacks to school presentations and awkward toasts, and few relish the experience. This is why, when planning your marriage proposal, you should make it as easy as possible on yourself and not attempt to memorize your proposal speech.

Although it may seem like an easier route than handling cue cards or attempting to ad lib, memorization can have many downsides.

First, what has been memorized can easily be forgotten, especially in a moment as thrilling as your marriage proposal. Stumbling and groping for words, or- worse- accidentally scrambling your speech and getting lost halfway through will create the wrong impression.

Second, there’s a good chance that your speech will sound memorized, and not flow naturally. Why impose so much order and structure on a heartfelt speech?

Third, what you say doesn’t matter nearly as much as how you say it. She will be so caught up in the moment that she will likely not remember the exact words you said, but she will remember the feeling behind it. Don’t waste your time working on memorizing the perfect phrases, spend it on creating the perfect proposal experience.

Instead of memorizing your proposal speech, either speak from the heart, or use note cards. Either of these options will help you give a fluent and heartfelt proposal, with none of the pressure or problems of memorization.
