Proposal Planned by The Heart Bandits

Finding the perfect spot under a star lit sky is getting harder to do. Light pollution is a growing problem in urban areas and industrial light can travel as far as 200 miles from its origin. So how do you find the perfect place to propose when you want to do it under the stars?

You have to take weather into account first and foremost. This can be tricky because depending on the time of year and where you live, it may be difficult to find a time when the sky will be unobstructed from clouds. In the Northern Hemisphere, summer is likely to be the best time of year to find a clear sky.

Unless you live in the country and far away from neighbors, light pollution will be an issue. Avoid the city lights and drive well out of range – at least 200 miles from a large urban center – more if you’re able to. Two places that frequently have low light pollution and a beautiful night sky are the desert, and the mountains. Taking a long night drive can be incredibly romantic with the right music to set the mood. Once you reach your destination, be sure and let your eyes adjust to the darkness and the view. Turn off the car lights, and keep your cell phone tucked away.

Some of the best places for an incredible view in the United States are Clayton Lake State Park in New Mexico, Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah, Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania, and Sedona in Arizona. Of course, Alaska and Hawaii are also great for star gazing purposes, as are most National Parks.

Remember though, you should always have a backup plan. Even if you’ve done your research, and have picked the perfect spot, nature doesn’t always cooperate. Consider having a plan B at the ready, just in case.
