Men’s Health conducted a survey on “Perceptions of What Is Romantic“.  There are many interesting results, but for me, I found the following data very intriguing.

What the average guy thinks is the best time to propose: A random date and time

The best place to pop the question: A place that holds sentimental value

Percentage of women who would prefer a romantic proposal to a gaudy ring: 84

Why do I think that is interesting?  Because it is exactly what I tell all of my clients.  A lot of my clients want to propose on their anniversary or a major holiday.  It isn’t a deal breaker but I think a random date is better because she won’t be expecting it. Also, when you propose that day should be just about you and her and the proposal.  And that date will become an anniversary of the day you proposed!

Where to pop the question and how are obviously the things we get asked the most and my advice is always to do it at a place and in a way that is special to both of you.  You shouldn’t just randomly propose at a restaurant that you have never been too simply because it seems romantic.  I recommend you propose at a place and in a way that has a lot of meaning to your individual relationship.  Something that will show her that you put a great deal of thought into this.

84% of women would rather have a romantic proposal than a guady ring.  Interesting!  So why then do men create a big budget for a ring and almost no budget for the proposal?  Yes you have to have a nice ring, but the way you propose is the most important part.  It is the day she has dreamed of her whole life, you have to give her an amazing story.
