When we see a proposal taking place or imagine our dream proposal, we often see the man kneeling at his partner’s feet. This has been a marriage proposal tradition that has been taking place for hundreds of years, but do you know the significance of kneeling during a proposal?

The historical importance of kneeling dates back to the days when royals bestowed knighthood to brave and valiant knight. The knights would kneel down during the ceremony to show their respect for the royal family. In a marriage proposal, the significance of bending down on one knee shows that you are surrendering yourself completely to your partner. Over the years, the bended knee has come to also signify respect, honor, loyalty and spirituality from one person to the other.

The overall significance of a marriage proposal is for the couple to show the world that they are in a transition phase of their relationship, moving their courtship to a more serious one where they will spend the rest of their lives together. The engagement period is a joyous time for the couple that includes the proposal, showing off the ring, announcement parties, setting the wedding date and the actual day of marriage.
