There comes a moment in your relationship when you realize that you’ve found the one- that this is the woman you want to spend the rest of your life with. Once you’ve made that decision, however, when is the right time to propose? It might be tempting to just arrange a lavish proposal the moment you realize that she is the one for you, but it is inadvisable to rush into it.  While we can’t guarantee she will say yes, there are certain things to consider to help increase your chances in receiving a “Yes!” when you do go down on one knee.

The Talk

Has she ever talked about her ‘someday’ marriage? If the two of you have had any far-ranging conversations about the future, she may have outlined for you what conditions she would like to be married under- how long would she have been dating? Would she want to get married whenever it felt right, or is there something she wants to happen first, such as graduating from college? Think carefully about anything she might have said in the past before deciding when and how to propose.

Signs

Is there any sign that she’s already started thinking about marriage? If she’s sending you pictures of ring, or if her pinterest account is filling up with pictures of gowns and chapels, then that’s a sign that she is ready for a marriage proposal. If she has started any conversations about her ideal proposal or wedding, then you have to wonder if a proposal will not be unwelcome.

Initiate

If she hasn’t broached the subject already, it’s a very good idea to have a serious conversation about the future before going forward with your proposal. It’s important to know that she’s ready for marriage- better to wait a little longer than risk a refusal if you propose now. Talk about your lives together, and try to sound her out about the subject of marriage.
