When planning a marriage proposal near a holiday, it can be easy to get swept up in the excitement of the season, and go overboard. While it is possible to create a stunning seasonal proposal that incorporates holiday elements, an all-out holiday proposal can fall flat or fail entirely. We’ve rounded up a few Halloween proposal ideas that should be avoided at all costs.

Pumpkin Proposal

Although cute, hiding a ring inside a pumpkin is a proposal plan that is just not ideal. Some people try to propose by hiding their ring in all sorts of unlikely places, and a pumpkin that your sweetheart will carve seems like a perfect hiding place, but there are a few problems inherent in the plan. First, it will be ridiculously easy to lose the ring if the pumpkin is uncarved; when she reaches in to scoop out the pumpkin’s interior, it would be easy not to feel it among the strings and seeds, and send it into the garbage without a second thought. Even if she finds it, it may be so coated in pumpkin goo that it will be hard to recognize, and it certainly will not look its best under those circumstances.

Scary Costume Proposal

Some people like to design funny proposals, and that’s good! Humor is a big part of your relationship, and bringing it into the proposal can really personalize the experience. However, it is absolutely vital that the proposal is funny to both of you. Dressing up as a terrifying demon and jumping out of a shadow will make her scream, and in retrospect the prank may be hilarious to both of you, but if at the moment of terror you drop on one knee, it’s unlikely that she will be too keen on accepting your proposal. Tone it down and play it safe if you feel the need to work Halloween costumes into your proposal.

Candy Proposal

Sweets are a big part of the Halloween season, but tread lightly when working them into your proposal. It may be tempting to hide the ring in a bowl of Halloween candy, or to spell out the big question in letters made of candy corn, but candy-themed proposals are not the best fit for every girl. If she is health-conscious, she may not appreciate being confronted with stacks of sugar, even if your intentions are good. If it’s late in the season, she may be sick to death of candy; the sight of one more tootsie roll may repel her. It must also be said that a candy-themed proposal can be perceived as juvenile, and may not show you in the most mature light.

Remember, if you want to create a seasonal proposal, it’s important that first and foremost you plan an amazing proposal, and only then try to work in some seasonal elements. Use a light touch, and don’t overdo it on the holiday theme; the proposal is about you and your sweetheart and the rest of your life together, not about candy corn and pranking.
