Diversity is a beautiful thing. We live in a world where international travel is easy and cross-cultural connections are commonplace. Its no surprise that more couples than ever are coming from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds to create new, blended families. Some cultures have specific traditions regarding marriage and even proposals. If your partner comes from a different background, it may be a good idea to know what those traditions are to ensure a harmonious reception when you ask for their hand in marriage.

If your partner has already discussed these traditions with you – fantastic! You’re ahead of the game. If they haven’t, there are several ways to find out this information.

For a completely hands off approach, you can use a search engine and read through the vast knowledge that the internet has to offer on the subject. This will probably give you an overall guide that you can follow – but it may not include family specific traditions. If you use a shared computer, be sure to erase your search history so your partner doesn’t figure out what you’re up to.

The best place to learn what family specific traditions your partner may have is by asking your partner’s family members directly. If your partner has a sibling, this may be an ideal starting point. In some cultures, asking for a parent’s permission is expected, so you may want to avoid asking your partner’s parents. Choose your sources wisely.

If you’re unable to communicate directly with a family member because of distance or a language barrier, consider speaking to your partner’s friends. Even if they don’t know, they can likely find out for you. This also comes with a bit of risk if they are unable to keep this information to themselves. Use your best judgment.

No matter what your cultural background, you and your partner deserve to have the marriage proposal of your dreams.
