A lot of proposal planning is focused on the window dressing- the setup, the location, the food, the music, the ring- but it is a good idea to stop and consider what you’ll say on the big day. It’s all too easy to let something slip that was better left unsaid, and you want to have a plan in place to make sure you’ll say the right thing. Here are a few phrases you should never, ever say while proposing:
“It seems like the next logical step.”
Since when does love have anything to do with logic? You want to make her feel loved and treasured, not like she’s part of a math problem.
“I want to make an honest woman out of you.”
This makes it sound as though her whole relationship with you has been some sort of illicit mistake. A proposal is about embracing your lives together, not about covering up past indiscretions. Leave this phrase in the last century, where it belongs.
“My parents keep bugging me about when we’ll get married.”
Getting married is your choice, and your choice alone. Parental pressure is a terrible motivation for getting married, and an even worse enticement. This line is guaranteed to make her feel unappreciated and undervalued, and it won’t do anything to help her relationship with your parents.
“Everyone else is getting married.”
Keeping up with the Joneses isn’t a great idea when buying houses or cars, and it’s a downright terrible idea when planning your marriage. Moreover, this makes her sound like a means to an end. Would you marry anyone, just to be like your friends?
“I guess we should probably get married.”
This is about as romantic as “Well, I should probably get dinner started.” Your engagement might feel inevitable, but that’s because of destiny, not because of inertia. Marriage isn’t something that just creeps up on you, and your proposal is an important step in the journey of your relationship. You don’t need to make it sound like a chore.
