wrong-time-to-propose

Timing is an integral part of proposing; some might even contend that “timing is everything.”  Whether it is the most important element of planning a proposal or not, getting the moment right is important.  Knowing when to propose is paramount, but knowing when not to can take some of the guesswork out of your planning process. Here are 5 times when you should avoid proposing:

During An Event Thrown By Someone Else

Common courtesy dictates that it is rude to plan your marriage proposal during an event being put on by someone else.  An interruption of this magnitude can cause a flurry of negative feelings being directed at you, and your fiancé to be.

Immediately Following the Loss of a Loved One

It may seem like a good idea to cheer up your partner – but it is never a good idea to propose immediately following the loss of a loved one.  Emotions can be all over the map following a trauma like this, and you don’t want your proposal to be tinged with the sadness and grief that naturally comes with this type of occurrence.  Give yourself and your partner time to grieve and move on before proposing.

Because it is Expected

Perhaps you’ve been together for several years.  Family members and friends continually ask when you’re going to get married.  Maybe you’re going to be away for several months or years.  Whatever the reason, there is an expectation from those around you that you will pop the question.  Never, ever propose simply because it is expected.

During A Major Life Event

There is a time and place for just about everything. Sometimes it’s best to have major life events stand on their own.  Graduation, birthdays, family reunions – these are some of the things that should be their own celebration.  Piggybacking on another major event doesn’t help your proposal stand out the way that it should.

To Try and Save the Relationship

If your relationship has taken a turn for the worst, or if you feel a breakup is imminent, it is a terrible idea to try and save it with a proposal.  While it may show that you’re committed to making the relationship work, it isn’t the best time for a proposal to happen.  Work out the problems that you have first; once you’re back on solid ground and things are going great, revisit the idea of proposing.
